Model and influencer Josie Canseco faced backlash after posting a tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot during a campus event. Canseco, 28, daughter of former baseball player Jose Canseco and model Jessica Canseco, shared a message with her 1.2 million Instagram followers, calling Kirk “one of the smartest people of our time” and expressing sympathy for his wife and children.
In a follow-up Instagram story, Canseco clarified that violence should never be condoned over political disagreements. She urged people to reject any mindset that celebrates such acts, regardless of differing views.
Despite her respectful tone, Canseco was met with online criticism. Some accused her of glorifying Kirk, calling her comments insensitive. Others mocked her intelligence or announced they would unfollow her—highlighting the deep polarization surrounding Kirk’s legacy.
She wasn’t alone. HGTV personality Erin Napier also faced backlash after posting a tribute to Kirk. Napier responded to negative messages by condemning those who celebrate death and telling critics to unfollow her.
Kirk, 31, was the founder of conservative youth group Turning Point USA. He was shot on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. A 22-year-old suspect was arrested days later after being identified by his father. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed a partially destroyed note revealing the suspect’s intent was found.
Canseco’s experience underscores how politically charged public discourse has become. Even expressions of sympathy can spark outrage, reflecting the intensity of today’s cultural divisions.
