Since returning to office last month, US President Donald Trump has made significant changes, including signing 73 executive orders, the most in a president’s first 100 days in over 40 years. More recently, Trump turned his focus to the Oval Office’s decor, removing the iconic Resolute Desk.
Crafted from the British exploration ship HMS Resolute and gifted to President Rutherford Hayes in 1880, the desk has been used by nearly every US president. Trump replaced it with the C&O Desk, a temporary piece used by President George H.W. Bush. Trump announced that the Resolute Desk was undergoing refurbishments, a task he deemed essential.
This decision came just days after Elon Musk’s 4-year-old son, X, visited the White House and was seen fidgeting and picking his nose, reportedly wiping it on the desk. Comments quickly flooded social media, with many linking X’s actions to the desk’s need for refinishing.
