A deadly bus crash on a mountainous road in Bolivia has resulted in the deaths of more than thirty people, according to police authorities. The accident occurred when the bus plunged nearly 800 meters into a deep ravine, highlighting the extreme danger of travel on Bolivia’s winding mountain roads. Officials confirmed that the crash is one of the deadliest traffic incidents in the country this year.
The crash took place in the southwest Yocalla district, an area known for its steep terrain and hazardous driving conditions. A police officer stated that the bus veered off the road and fell into the ravine, leaving little chance for passengers to escape. Emergency services were quickly dispatched, but the severity of the fall made rescue efforts extremely difficult.
In addition to the fatalities, at least 14 people were injured in the accident, including four children. A video released by a local hospital official showed victims receiving emergency medical treatment. Several of the injured were reported to be in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could rise further in the coming days.
Police reported that the bus was traveling between the cities of Potosí and Oruro at the time of the crash. According to police colonel Victor Benavides, who spoke to the AFP news agency, investigators believe excessive speed may have played a major role. He stated that the driver appeared unable to control the vehicle, which likely led to the tragic outcome.
Bolivia’s road infrastructure, particularly in mountainous regions, is widely regarded as dangerous. Narrow roads, sharp curves, high altitudes, and limited safety barriers contribute to frequent and severe accidents. Authorities have long warned that these conditions, combined with speeding and driver fatigue, significantly increase the risk of deadly crashes.
Fatal traffic accidents are a persistent problem in Bolivia. Just one month earlier, another bus crash near Potosí claimed the lives of 19 people. In a country of approximately 12 million residents, government statistics show that road accidents kill an average of 1,400 people each year, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement.
