You know the scene—a fly buzzing around the fruit bowl like it owns the place, or a roach darting under the sink. These tiny invaders can turn a calm kitchen into a battlefield. Luckily, you might already have a simple, effective deterrent hiding in your bathroom and pantry.
Why this combo works:
Peppermint and mint toothpaste release a strong, cooling scent that many bugs hate—flies, mosquitoes, and even roaches. When combined with the fizz of baking soda and white vinegar, you get a sharp reaction plus a lingering minty aroma that pests prefer to avoid.
How to make it (just 5 minutes!):
-
1 tbsp mint toothpaste
-
1 tbsp baking soda
-
1 tbsp white vinegar
-
½ cup (120 ml) lukewarm water
-
5–10 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)
-
Small shallow containers (jar lids, saucers, etc.)
Mix the toothpaste and baking soda into a smooth paste. Slowly add the vinegar—it will foam, which is normal. Stir in warm water, then add peppermint oil if using. Pour into your containers.
Where to place it:
Set the containers behind trash bins, near sinks and drains, by doors and windows, or in dark corners where bugs linger. You can also swipe a thin line along baseboards or behind appliances with a cotton swab.
What to expect:
Within an hour, you’ll notice a fresh minty scent and fewer fly-bys. Mosquitoes and flies tend to stay away, while roaches—sensitive to strong smells and the fizz—often retreat.
Tips:
Refresh every 2–3 days. Use it as a natural barrier near doors and windows. Keep surfaces clean—no repellent beats good hygiene.
Safety:
Keep away from kids. Essential oils can irritate skin and harm pets (especially cats). Skip oils if you have pets, and place containers where paws can’t reach.
This simple, low-cost trick helps make your home less inviting to unwanted guests, using what you already have on hand.
