Former Biden State Dept. Staffer Pleads Guilty In Fraud Scheme

A former State Department budget analyst under the Biden administration, Levita Almuete Ferrer, 64, pleaded guilty to embezzling over $650,000 from the agency between March 2022 and April 2024.

Ferrer misused her authority to write and deposit 63 checks—60 to herself and three to an acquaintance—totaling $657,347.50.

She altered QuickBooks entries to disguise the fraud by changing her name to legitimate vendors after printing the checks.

Ferrer, also known as Levita Brezovic, admitted guilt to theft of government property and faces up to 10 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for September 18.

As part of her plea deal, she agreed to repay the stolen funds and is subject to a forfeiture judgment. The case highlights vulnerabilities in financial oversight within government agencies.
