President of the United States Donald Trump Speaks About the Washington, D.C., Plane Crash

On January 29, 2025, a tragic mid-air collision occurred near Reagan Washington National Airport when a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet, Flight 5342, collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter. The crash, which took place around 9 p.m., left the wreckage scattered across the Potomac River. The regional jet, en route from Wichita, Kansas, was descending to land when it collided with the helicopter, which had a three-member military crew on board. The crash killed at least 30 people, with recovery efforts hindered by freezing temperatures and challenging conditions.

President Donald Trump addressed the incident on Truth Social, questioning why the helicopter did not alter its flight path or receive direction from the control tower. He expressed disbelief that the situation could have been avoided and emphasized its seriousness. In his second post, he offered prayers for those affected. Vice President JD Vance also shared his thoughts, asking for prayers and monitoring the situation. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged the severity of the crash, with prayers and support for those impacted.

As the investigation unfolds, officials from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are involved. Investigators have recovered one of the aircraft’s black boxes, and search teams continue combing the river for more wreckage. The tragedy has drawn widespread condolences, with public figures like Kansas Senator Roger Marshall and Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins offering support. Rescue operations continue, though the likelihood of finding survivors diminishes with the harsh conditions.
