A devastating crash between an American Airlines plane and a US Army helicopter occurred near Washington, DC, with no survivors expected. The American Airlines plane, carrying 60 passengers and 4 crew members, collided mid-air with a helicopter that had 3 aboard, resulting in a catastrophic explosion. The crash occurred minutes before the plane’s scheduled landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport. Air traffic control had cleared the plane for landing and instructed the helicopter to pass behind it, but no response came from the helicopter before the collision. Wreckage was found in the Potomac River, with 28 bodies recovered so far. Among the victims were several athletes and coaches returning from a U.S. Figure Skating event. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom expressed condolences, while President Trump criticized the incident as preventable. Authorities are investigating the cause, with the black boxes from both aircraft key to understanding the tragedy. The rescue operation has transitioned to recovery efforts.
